Planes, trains and automobiles: A Day at the Transport Museum

Primary School Varied Lessons Local Impact SIS Schönenwerd

Grade 3 at SIS Schönenwerd visited the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus) earlier this month to support their learning in Geography and Science. On Monday, 19 January, the class travelled to Luzern with their two class teachers and enjoyed a fantastic day full of discovery.

With such a wide variety of activities to explore, there was something for everyone— from the Hans Erni Museum and the Swiss Chocolate Adventure to the Film Theatre. The students even had time for a little stroll along the lake before heading back to school, tired but smiling after a great day out.

Exploring Vehicles at the Hans Erni Museum
In the Hans Erni Museum, the students looked at a range of different vehicles, including helicopters, planes, parachutes and more. They enjoyed all the interactive exhibitions such as using computers to complete quizzes and read information, and experiencing what it feels like when a helicopter lands next to you with a wind machine and a video—which was really fun!

A 3D Dinosaur Adventure
In the Film Theatre, the students watched a 3D film about dinosaurs with special 3D glasses that made the pictures jump off the screen and also made them look really cool! This taught us about how the Earth looked millions of years ago when dinosaurs roamed freely and showed how we collect dinosaur bones and fossils today.

Swiss Chocolate Adventure
Later, in the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, the students rode around in special electric ‘cars’ and learned all about the history of chocolate in Switzerland. They also learned where the chocolate comes from and how it is produced, and they even received some chocolate samples to take home to enjoy later.

Linking Learning Back to the Classroom
All these wonderful experiences helped the students consolidate their learning in Geography from Term 2 and got them very excited for their new English Science topic of Forces and Flight coming up next. It was a great day out with a lot of tired but smiling children on the train home.
