The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Secondary School Varied Lessons Student Life Milestones and Achievements SIS Friedrichshafen

Builds skills through service, activity and adventure

The Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award is a youth achievement programme that helps young people develop life skills. The award has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each level challenges participants to complete activities in four areas: Volunteering, Physical Activity, Skills, and an Adventurous Journey. The Gold level also includes a Residential Project, where participants stay away from home and work with others on a shared goal.

“The DofE Award is a positive experience that changes you into the best version of yourself, giving more value and meaning to your life.”

Since 2024, the DofE Award has been offered at SIS Swiss International School in Friedrichshafen, giving students an opportunity to take part in this experience. This programme is not only about adventure but also about personal growth. It helps young people become more independent, confident, and responsible.

One of the best things about the DofE Award are the memories it creates. Many participants say that their adventurous journeys – hiking in the mountains, camping with friends, or navigating through forests – are some of the best experiences of their lives. The award also gives young people a chance to meet new people, learn new skills, and challenge themselves.

“The DofE Award has made me a more consistent and organised person. It has forced me to do tasks even when I am tired and made me an overall more independent person.”

Chloe

Whether it’s learning a new language, playing an instrument, or volunteering in the community, every activity helps to build a better future. The skills learned through the DofE Award are valuable for life. Teamwork, leadership, problem solving, and perseverance are just a few of the qualities that participants develop. These skills are not only useful for personal growth but also highly valued by universities and employers (Amani, Youth Ambassador).

“DofE Award students surpass themselves and are very proud of what they achieved. I love to see how they collaborate in their team, in good times and bad times. They really work hard and go out of their comfort zone, especially during the expeditions. For some students, the Bronze Level is enough, which is perfectly fine. Some others aim for the full programme. This really shows strong perseverance and determination skills, as it gets harder and longer at each level. I’m looking forward to accompanying these students throughout the programme this year again and seeing what they will accomplish!”
