The Power of Student Choice in Reading

Reading literature in school has always been a part of education, but allowing students to choose from a prepared list of ageappropriate books suitable for their year level adds an entirely new dimension to the experience. When given the freedom to select a novel that matches their interests, students engage more deeply with the text, encouraging both reading and critical thinking skills. Having introduced this in Year 5 and Year 8 last year, we’ve found it encourages independence, creativity, and individual commitment. We are currently carrying out this project across Years 5 to 10.

Benefits of Student-Choice Reading
One of the biggest advantages of student-choice reading is simply motivation. When students read books that genuinely interest them, they are more likely to complete the reading,
participate in projects, and reflect. Self-selected novels create a sense of ownership and enthusiasm that leads to more participation. Another benefit is improved comprehension and critical thinking. When students are allowed to choose a book to read, they naturally learn to think independently and draw conclusions. A deeper understanding and appreciation of literature is developed.

Creative Projects to Showcase Understanding
Students complete a project based on their chosen novel. Instead of standard book reports, different presentation methods encourage students to engage with their choice of
novel, showing their strengths and interests. One option is a presentation, where students summarise the plot, analyse characters, and discuss themes. Videos, movie trailers, images, or even music to help bring their book to life and make their ideas more dynamic are encouraged. Role play, where students act out key scenes from their novel, is also popular. This method encourages a deeper understanding of characters; students become the character they are portraying.

For hands-on learners, creating a model based on some aspect of the novel – such as an important symbol, or a representation of a key scene, offers a unique way to express understanding. This could take the form of a scene from the novel as a piece of art, a sculpture, or even a digital storyline, giving students the opportunity to express their individuality.

Encouraging Individuality and Personal Growth
The key to this approach is student choice. By having options, students’ unique perspectives shine through. Self-expression, confidence, and communication skills are enhanced.

An English Afternoon Café
An English Café is being planned to highlight our expanded project. This special event provides an opportunity for students to showcase their chosen novels and creative projects in a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. Parents are invited to attend and celebrate our love of reading. The event includes presentations, role-playing performances, and displays created by students. We hope to make this an annual tradition, fostering a love for reading and storytelling in our school community.
