Together, We Empower Change for Sustainable Living
As an educational institution, we are aware of our responsibility regarding sustainability. The impact of SIS Swiss International School extends beyond operations and includes, in particular, what and how we teach in schools, which ultimately influences future generations.
For this reason, the national companies of the SIS Group approach sustainability strategically from two directions. Firstly, they monitor their CO2 emissions and work continuously to reduce them, with the long-term goal of achieving net zero. Secondly, as part of our educational philosophy, we promote a sustainability-oriented attitude that takes into account social, environmental, cultural and economic factors.
Towards Net Zero 2050
In 2023, our companies in Germany, Brazil and Switzerland each developed individual strategies to reduce CO2 emissions, based on previous emissions surveys. Our strategic principle is to strive for environmental sustainability in everything we do. We will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in line with the targets set by the European Union.
Our reduction strategies are tailored to the respective local conditions and needs of the individual countries. Each national company has defined specific measures to reduce its CO2 footprint, especially in the areas of meals, personnel transport and heating.
In order to make progress transparent, our companies record their CO2 footprint annually and review the effectiveness of the measures they have implemented. Our first key milestone on the way to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 is to reduce them by at least 25 % relative to business performance by 2029.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
We believe giving students the lead at the school level is key, as the future belongs to them. To that end, each SIS school has created a student sustainability team guided by a lead sustainability teacher. We use an action-learning approach that involves identifying the current situation, exploring alternatives, acting and reflecting on the change. SIS has designated country ambassadors who have written guidelines and provided a sustainability framework for students to work within. They support the schools with resources and arrange sustainability sharing days.
