Building Community Beyond the Classroom

A strong sense of community is at the heart of school life at SIS Berlin, and whole-school gatherings play an important role in bringing students of all ages together. They provide a space to share achievements, celebrate initiatives, and give students a voice in shaping their environment.

Student-led groups such as the Student Council and Sustainability Team are central to this process. They regularly introduce projects that encourage responsibility, collaboration, and engagement beyond the classroom. From organising school-wide activities to developing ideas that support both the school and the wider community, these initiatives help students experience what it means to take ownership and make a difference.

One example of this commitment is involvement in charitable projects, such as food collection campaigns that support local organisations working with people in need. Through these experiences, students not only contribute to meaningful causes but also develop a deeper understanding of social responsibility and empathy.

At the same time, interactive activities within the school—such as quizzes or friendly competitions—create opportunities for teamwork and shared experiences across year groups. These moments of collective participation strengthen connections and contribute to a positive, inclusive school culture.

A key element that brings excitement to our school community is the house system. Divided into different teams, students work together throughout the year to earn points through a variety of academic, social, and extracurricular activities. Regular updates on house standings add a sense of anticipation, while small rewards, such as special themed days, recognise effort and achievement in a fun and motivating way.

Altogether, these shared experiences highlight how school life extends far beyond the classroom. By encouraging student voice, promoting collaboration, and celebrating success, schools create an environment where young people feel connected, valued, and inspired to contribute—both within the school and beyond.
