Where Food Meets Bilingual Learning

A sense of belonging is essential for meaningful learning. At SIS Frankfurt, the power of relationships is at the heart of our international school community. Close connections between families, students and staff create a learning environment in which children feel supported, valued and inspired. The annual International Food Fair is a vivid expression of this spirit and highlights how bilingual education becomes a meaningful investment in the future.

Each year, parents transform the school hall into a vibrant marketplace of flavours, sharing dishes from around the world. More than a culinary event, the Food Fair creates space for genuine encounters. Conversations emerge naturally, often switching between languages, reflecting the lived reality of our bilingual community. As one parent shared, “Events like this remind us how special our school is. You can feel the warmth the moment you walk in.”

For students, the experience is both joyful and educational. Equipped with “passports”, they explore different cultures, collect stamps, and engage with new tastes and traditions. “My favourite part was getting my passport stamped – it felt like travelling!” a Year 3 student explained. From potato salad to kimchi, the variety reflects the rich cultural mix of our community.

The programme is enriched by performances from each class, including songs and short drama pieces. These contributions reflect not only creativity but also the confidence that grows in a supportive, multilingual environment. As Ms Locke noted, “The Food Fair shows what happens when families, students and staff come together. It’s learning, community and celebration all in one.”

Food has a unique way of connecting people. It sparks conversations, builds understanding, and reminds us that our differences are something to celebrate. In this way, the Food Fair exemplifies how strong relationships enhance bilingual education: children learn to communicate across cultures, appreciate diversity, and navigate an international world with confidence.
