Learning, Thinking and Growing in Two Languages

At SIS Swiss International School Berlin, bilingual education is approached as a way of thinking and engaging with the world. Students learn in both German and English across all subjects, from mathematics and science to the humanities, the arts, and specialised SIS programmes such as Reading and Writing and Science and IT, using language as a tool for reasoning, questioning, and exploring ideas rather than treating it as a separate subject.

Language learning begins in kindergarten and continues through secondary school, guided by the “one teacher – one language” principle. Each teacher consistently communicates in either German or English, providing authentic exposure and helping students develop analytical thinking, creativity, cognitive flexibility and global awareness. Students do not simply acquire vocabulary, they learn to approach challenges from multiple perspectives and to reflect critically in both languages.

Language learning is closely linked to school life and community engagement. The House Competition encourages collaboration and leadership across year groups, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. The annual SIS Cup brings together students from SIS schools worldwide in sports competitions that emphasise teamwork, perseverance and fair play. Participation in Model United Nations (MUN) events provide further opportunities to debate, negotiate and engage with international issues, strengthening confidence, diplomacy and intercultural understanding.

As an all-day school, SIS Berlin balances academic learning with personal development. Supervised study sessions, clubs and enrichment activities give students time to explore individual interests and develop skills beyond the classroom. The annual Summer Holiday Camp continues learning during school breaks, combining creative projects, sports and thematic activities in German and English, offering practical opportunities to practise language and collaboration in a stimulating environment.

Throughout the year, students can engage in sports programmes, music and drama classes, and additional language courses. These extracurricular opportunities complement the academic curriculum, support personal growth and give students practical ways to develop both language proficiency and collaborative skills.

In the upper secondary years, students prepare for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or the Abitur. Both pathways uphold rigorous academic standards and prepare students for higher education in Germany and internationally. Graduates leave fluent in German and English, equipped with analytical skills, cultural understanding and the confidence to engage with diverse global contexts.
