LakeMUN 2020

A Virtual Meeting

On the weekend of 6 to 8 November 2020, members of the SIS Swiss International School Regensburg Debate AG took part in the virtual LakeMUN Friedrichshafen conference. The MUN (Model United Nations) is a chance for students to debate world topics as assigned country representatives on different councils. The conference’s overall theme was “Peace, justice, and strong institutions”. Students were assigned to two councils: The Human Rights Council and the Security Council.

The students assigned to the Human Rights Council [Fernanda Ordorica, Grade 12 (Bolivia), Prisha Kapoor, Grade 11 (the United Kingdom), Medha Lakshimi, Grade 10 (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Erolinda Ramaj, Grade 10 (Dominican Republic)] debated the situation in Belarus and the cruel acts committed in concentration camps for Uyghurs in China. Students that sat on the Security Council [Kaloyan Tsvetkov, Grade 12 (the United States) and Jerome Gangabada, Grade 10 (Mexico)] considered threats to international peace and security in Central America and territorial disputes in the South China seas.

Each council lobbied and debated resolutions to find a solution to the problems before them. The representatives on the Human Rights Council gave excellent speeches detailing their country’s stance on the subjects up for debate. The delegates of the Security Council almost started WWIII but luckily were able to come to a satisfactory resolution for all, showing that diplomatic relations are not dead.

Each student defended their arguments eloquently and with much success. Congratulations to each one of them for a successful conference. Special mention goes to Prisha Kapoor, who was named the best delegate on the Human Rights Council. Well done to all!
