Guided Reading

Seasoned readers help beginners practice

As the current school year draws to a close, this also marks the conclusion of the second year of “Guided Reading” at SIS Swiss International School Friedrichshafen. The project, started by a dedicated parent, is designed to give primary school students a chance to practice their reading skills. Once a week, students sit down individually with an adult and read to them. These are parents or grandparents who take time out of busy schedules to listen to a reading beginner.

Having a captive audience of one is an encouragement to students and the volunteers also assist when students encounter a particularly difficult word or struggle with pronunciation or reading comprehension. There are volunteers for both German and English, so that students may practice reading in both languages. Guided Reading has become a valuable part of lessons and will continue in the new school year.
