Primary School

Our students, bilingual education and a healthy performance-based approach are central at SIS.

The SIS primary school curriculum is consistent with the state curriculum which is supplemented by elements of international educational practice as well as by pedagogical standards developed by SIS. By attending our Primary School, children are ideally prepared for the transition into our bilingual Secondary School. Students can transfer from and into the public school system at any time.

The bilingual primary school at SIS Swiss International School is a private all-day school. It provides a stimulating bilingual learning environment in an international community for children starting at age six.

As a rule, each class has a German-speaking and an English-speaking class teacher, who take turns teaching in roughly equal measure. Subjects such as mathematics or social studies are taught in both languages, ensuring the children acquire a broad vocabulary.

At SIS, teaching is based on the curriculum of the respective German federal state. The development of language skills in German and English are of paramount importance at the SIS Primary School. This is why SIS has developed its own bilingual reading and writing curriculum. In addition to the information taught in the lessons, children also learn techniques for learning and studying that put them in a position to gain knowledge independently and to reflect on the progress they are making in their learning.

Activities and lessons are organised in a full-day programme divided into regular intervals with time for learning, playing and breaks; this provides excellent opportunities for social learning and for the children's personalities to develop and grow. Eating and playing together, sharing, proving themselves – all these things build the children's self-confidence, empathy and sense of responsibility.
