We Make Real Flashlights

To complete the electricity unit, our fourth grade students applied their knowledge of energy and electrical circuits to make real, working flashlights. Using a toilet paper roll, some wires, two double DD batteries, a light bulb, and paper clips to construct a simple switch, students assembled their flashlights step-by-step, trouble-shooting problems and using electrical tape to secure everything. Once finished, students customised their flashlights with tape and some even fashioned paper "reflectors" around the top to illuminate their light bulb even more. It was a fun and hands-on end to an interesting and practical science unit.
